Football:
Although nothing seemed to be working in the first six weeks of the 2024 season, one had to believe that St. Francis was too talented and well coached not to break out at some point.
And on Friday night, the Golden Knights secured a 37-13 Angelus League victory at Alemany to notch win number one.
Trailing 7-0, Isaac Fajardo gave SFHS its first lead of the game at 8-7, after scoring on a 1-yard TD run.
Fajardo also cashed in the two-point conversion (run) at the 8:23 mark of the second quarter.
Nearly five minutes later, the Golden Knights extended their lead to 15-7, and it had to be a special moment for at least two St. Francis athletes.
John Sanders, the St. Francis quarterback, tossed a 20-yard TD pass to his little brother, Shawn Sanders.
Fajardo scored for the second time on a 3-yard TD run with 2:19 left in the third quarter.
That gave SFHS a 22-13 lead.
Just barely into the fourth quarter, Sanders hooked up with Brady Cofre on a 40-yard TD pass.
Fajardo would score for a third time to officially put the game on ice.
He rumbled in from 33 yards out with 1:54 to play, and it gave the Golden Knights an insurmountable 37-13 lead.
Valentino May tossed TD passes of 35 and 38 yards for Alemany.
Quotable:
St. Francis quarterback, John Sanders: “I knew we’ve had it in us to win like that for a while, it just took time to show it. Our guys stepped up when it was needed in all aspects of the game.”
