Football:

Mt. SAC improved to 2-0 after Saturday’s 22-14 victory over their visitors from Ventura College.

But it was anything but easy.

The Pirates led until the 10:42 mark of the third quarter.

Juwan Grant caught a 20-yard TD pass from Noah Fuailetolo to give the Mounties a 10-7 lead.

Alta Loma High’s Jacob Bonilla stretched the MSAC advantage to 19-7 after consecutive field goals of 30, 41 and 27 yards.

With three minutes left in the game, Ventura quarterback Daniel Duran scored on a 1-yard TD run to pull the Pirates to within 19-14.

Bonilla, who went 4-for-4 on field goal attempts, converted on a 35-yard field goal with 1:55 to play.

And the Mounties defense would do the rest.

Bonilla replaced Matthew Fidone after Fidone made a 42-yard field goal in the first half, but he missed his next attempt.

Devin Miles is worth the price of admission himself.

Miles had 130 yards rushing on 23 carries, and he had a pair of TD runs called back.

The first was after a Ventura played ripped his helmet off, and the second came on a Mt. SAC penalty.

But the way Miles runs the ball, and his effort is infectious, according to Mounties coaching legend, Bob Jastrab.

Fuailetolo completed 20 of 30 for 150 yards and the one TD pass to Grant.

Grant finished with 61 receiving yards on three catches.

Joseph Najarro caught five passes for 22 yards.

Pierce Brown reeled in three passes for 31 yards.

Ventura had a 352-338 edge in total offense and both programs had 21 first downs.

But it was Mt. SAC’s 190-36 advantage on the ground that helped them control the clock, 36-24 minutes, on Saturday night.

Julien Lopez led the Mounties defense with seven tackles, including 1.5 sacks.

Juan Salas and Darrell Tripline had six tackles apiece.

Harold Peters had five tackles and an interception, and Dmitri Pierre also secured a pick for MSAC.

Duran has a solid day at quarterback.

The Ventura lefty completed 25 of 44 for 316 yards.

He tossed a 35-yard TD pass to Silas Kemp with 1:28 to play in the first quarter to give the Pirates a 7-0 lead.

Kemp had game highs in catches (6) and receiving yards (78) to go with his one score.

Jayon Farrar totaled four receptions for 60 yards.

Up next: The Mounties travel to Allan Hancock next Saturday at 2.

The Bulldogs (2-0) secured a 40-27 victory over ELAC.
