Girls Athlete of the Week:
In a remarkable five-day stretch, Etiwanda’s Cameryn Ortega made a lifetime of memories for herself.
After Alyssa Galindo wrapped up a CIF-SS Division 3 championship two weeks ago in the circle, Ortega took over the pitching duties for the entirely of the three-game CIF State Division 2 Southern California Regional playoffs.
In wins over Paraclete (10-0), Granada Hills Charter (1-0) and Mater Dei Catholic (5-4), the EHS senior went 18 2/3 innings and she didn’t allow an earned run.
To make the title even more satisfying for Ortega and her girls, the Eagles had to secure road wins at No. 2 seeded (GHC) and No. 1 (MDC) to earn their championship.
On Tuesday, Ortega went all six innings in a 10-0 mercy-rule victory over Paraclete, and she tossed a two-hit shutout.
Ortega walked a pair and fanned six PHS batters.
Two days later, Ortega threw a two-hit shutout in the Eagles 1-0 victory at Granada Hills Charter.
Ortega didn’t issue a base on balls and she struck out seven.
In Saturday’s title tilt, Ortega went 5 2/3 innings, allowing a pair of unearned run on three hits.
She issued five walks and struck out seven.
Over the past five days, Ortega finished her prep career by going 16 2/3 innings, not allowing an unearned run and scattering seven hits.
Ortega walked seven and struck out 20 opposing batters.
