Baseball:
Azusa had a 5-0 lead in the top of the fourth in Thursday’s semifinal round of the CIF State Division 5 Southern California Regional playoffs.
And they had their ace Josh Torres on the mound, so it was going to be clear sailing in their quest to earn a spot in Saturday’s D-5 final, right?
Mount Miguel had other ideas.
The Matadors got one run in the fourth, and they scored four more in the fifth to tie the game at 5-5.
Not to be outdone, the Aztecs got a two-out walk-off RBI triple from Isaac Miranda to secure a dramatic 6-5 victory in the bottom of the eighth inning.
Matt Barton went five innings, and he was charged with five runs (three earned) on five hits.
Barton walked five and fanned six AHS batters.
Tyler Kelly allowed an unearned run on one hit and two walks over 2 2/3 innings.
Matt Huizar was the offensive hero for AHS.
Huizar went 3-for-3 with a walk, double, triple, run and four RBIs.
In the first inning, Huizar’s bases loaded triple gave the Aztecs a 3-0 lead.
Three frames later, Huizar drove in a fourth run on an RBI double.
His twin, Zach Huizar, walked, singled twice and scored.
Miranda went 2-for-5, including the RBI triple and he scored once.
Jacob Elliot walked, singled and scored a pair of runs.
Edward Romero walked and scored.
Torres went the first 6 2/3 innings for Azusa and he allowed five runs on five hits.
Torres walked two and struck out 10 Mount Miguel batters.
Zach Huizar provided 1 1/3 scoreless innings in relief to earn the win.
Huizar allowed one hit, walked one and struck out one MMHS batter.
Jeremiah Castillo hit a solo HR in the top of the fourth inning, and in the fifth, Castillo hit a three-run shot to catch Azusa at 5-5.
Alex Sandoval went 2-for-3, scored and he had an RBI single in the fifth inning.
Easton Sanchez walked, singled and scored.
Up next: Azusa will meet up with Chavez on Saturday at 4 for the Division 5 So Cal Regional title.
The first pitch is set for 4 at Azusa Pacific University.
AHS hopes to push the game back to 6, so if a change is made, we’ll do our best to let you know.
Chavez (21-12) defeated Shafter, 4-2, on Thursday.
