The Chino Hills pitching staff deserves the lion’s share of the credit for the Huskies earning a spot in this weekend’s CIF-SS Division 5 championship game.
Favian Vasquez and Andrew Baldomino teamed up on a four-hit shutout in Tuesday’s 2-0 victory at Chino High School.
In four playoff wins, the Huskies pitching staff has allowed two total runs.
Moreover, they shut out Montebello and Chino in the quarterfinal and semifinal rounds, respectively.
Vasquez earned the win after going 4 1/3 scoreless innings and allowing two hits.
Vasquez walked three and he fanned a pair of Chino batters.
Baldomino registered the save by getting the final eight outs without any damage.
Baldomino allowed one hit, didn’t issue a walk and struck out one.
Eric Hernandez had half of Chino’s four hits, while Grant Vasquez and Matthew Gomez had one single each for the Cowboys.
Paccelli Nieto was saddled with the loss in spite of having an impressive outing.
Nieto went the distance, and he was charged with two runs on six hits.
Nieto walked one and fanned three CHHS batters.
Josh Mendez led off the top of the third inning with a single and he was bunted over to second.
One batter later, Jacob Jimenez singled Garcia home for a 1-0 lead.
In the fourth, Vasquez helped his own cause with an RBI single.
Frankie Brazil singled and scored.
Mendez was 2-for-3 and scored.
And Vasquez singled twice with the one RBI in the fourth inning.
Up next: The Huskies will battle Santa Monica this weekend for the D-5 championship.
The Vikings (21-7) shut out Pacifica, 4-0, in their Tuesday semifinal.
CIF-SS will assign the day, location and time at some point today.
