Baseball:

Village Christian took all the drama out of Friday’s CIF-SS Division 6 quarterfinal at West Covina very early.

The Crusaders scored five runs in the top of the first inning, and they cruised to a 7-1 victory over the Bulldogs.

VCHS out-hit WCHS, 13-2.

And Joshua Popjes never let West Covina get back into the game.

Popjes went the distance, and he allowed one run on two hits.

He didn’t issue a walk and fanned one WCHS batter.

Perhaps the most remarkable stat is Popjes needing just 65 pitches to finish what he started.

And he only threw 17 balls all game.

Jacob Nguyen was hit by pitch in the bottom of the first, and he scored on a two-out RBI single by Christian Salinas.

Garrett Mori and Jacob Nguyen had the other two hits for WCHS.

Edwin Segovia was charged with six runs (three earned) on nine hits over 3 2/3 innings.

Segovia issued one walk and he struck out five Village Christian batters.

Dylan Worrell singled, doubled, tripled and scored two runs.

Ryan French went 2-for-4 with two RBIs.

Ethan Tibert doubled and scored two runs.

Johan Pelayo singled and scored.

Hudson Nichols went 2-for-4 with a run and two RBIs.
