Baseball:
St. Francis had to feel fortunate to leave Notre Dame with a 1-0 Mission League victory on Tuesday.
The Golden Knights tallied just one hit and 12 of their 21 outs offensively came via strikeout.
But that was all Kalani Quiroz needed.
Quiroz tossed a six hit shutout, and the win moves the Golden Knights into sole possession of third place.
Quiroz issued two walks and fanned four.
He needed 87 pitches to finish what he started.
Kai Gonzaga walked and had a pair of singles.
Alex Richardson went 2-for-3.
Brett Binkley, John Trainor and Brody Thompson had one single apiece for Notre Dame.
Nate Kugler got the loss in spite of a great outing.
Kugler went the distance and allowed an unearned run on two hits.
He issued one walk and struck out 12 SFHS batters.
In the top of the sixth inning, Jackson Pratt reached on an error.
Two batters later, John Calmette would drive Pratt home on a sac fly.
Brody Ruyle had the lone base hit for the Golden Knights.
Up next: SFHS will host Notre Dame on Wednesday at 3:30.
Quotable:
St. Francis pitcher, Kalani Quiroz: “It was a fun game and great team win. I couldn’t have done it without my boys behind me and our great coaching staff. Happy Birthday to Coach Kort! The jobs not done and we still have a lot of games to go this season. Looking forward to competing again tomorrow. One game at a time.”
