Baseball:
It hasn’t been the start that COHS coach Elias Chavez had hoped for.
The Chargers secured just its second victory of the 2024 season.
And it took eight innings to edge visiting Los Altos, 2-1, on Wednesday.
But if you’ve paid attention to Chavez and his program since taking over the reins at COHS, the Chargers finish Valle Vista League play strong because of their battle-tested schedule that he puts together each season.
It’s also paid big dividends in the CIF-SS playoffs.
But back to Wednesday.
COHS got one run in the bottom of the first, and they scored one more in the eighth to secure a 2-1 victory.
Athen Malone went 6 2/3 innings, and he allowed just one run on three hits.
Malone walked two and fanned eight.
Aaron Ledesma got the final four outs without any damage.
Ledesma surrendered one hit, walked a batter and fanned one.
Christopher Barrientos had an RBI single for the Conquerors.
Isaac Galindo, Danny Duran and Nathan Barrera had one single apiece.
Manuel Tinajero was outstanding for Los Altos.
He went seven innings and allowed just one unearned run on eight hits.
Tinajero walked three and struck out three COHS batters.
Jordan Garcia got the loss after allowing the eighth inning run on one hit and a walk.
Moses Medrano singled to start the bottom half of the eighth.
It was his second hit of the game.
And four batters later, Julian Salmon walked with the bases to score Medrano.
Salmon also had a pair of singles.
Diego Flores, Jorge Aceves and Athen Malone singled in the win.
Zack Escalera singled and scored.
Up next: The Chargers host Warren (5-6) today (Friday) at 3:15.
