Girls Soccer:
Monrovia responded very well to its CIF-SS Division 4 title-game (2-0) loss to Louisville last Friday.
Four days later, the Lady Wildcats opened the CIF State Division 4 playoffs at home with a 4-0 victory over their visitors from Campbell Hall.
MHS led 3-0 at the half, and the game was never in doubt.
Five minutes in, Sofia Chiovare, a senior co-captain, threaded the needle with beautiful pass to Ava Hackworth for her first of three goals in the first half.
Ava’s second goal was a breakaway assisted by Daniella Cabrera-Giron, who found Hackworth in stride and she bullied her away through the defensive line.
Right before the half, Hackworth completed the hat trick when Maddie Maljian found her on the wing for a decisive third goal.
Midway through the second half, Hackworth made a beautiful cross finding Maddie Maljian, who put in the back of the net for the fourth and final goal.
Audrey Mendoza, also a senior co-captain, and Naeemah Browne, were putting on a show with amazing moves to the delight of the crowd.
The Monrovia defense silenced Campbell Hall all night, and they were led by Megan Kringen, America Ramos, Amara Mercado, Jasmine Rodriguez and Gabi Chiovare.
Miya Whoolery secured her 12th shutout of the season, including her second in the playoffs.
Up next: The Wildcats will get a chance to avenge last Friday’s loss when they travel to Louisville on Thursday night at 7:15.
The Royals (23-3) shut out their visitors from La Jolla Country Day, 5-0, in their first-round contest.
