Boys Basketball:
Eight days off didn’t do anything to disrupt Damien’s hot streak.
The Spartans clinched the outright Baseline League championship last Thursday, and they got a bye in Wednesday’s first round of the CIF-SS Division 1 playoffs.
On Friday, DHS hosted a Crossroads program that defeated Rancho Christian, 67-64, in their first-round contest.
Damien would jump to an early lead, and they cruised to a 68-50 victory.
The Spartans led by 14 after the first eight minutes, and they took a 44-15 lead into the break.
It was quite a night for Xavier Clinton.
The 6-foot-4 senior connected on six 3-pointers, and he finished with a game-high 24 points.
Clinton also became the 20th member in program history to join the 1,000-point club.
Nate Garcia chipped in with 18 points.
Aidan Croshere led Crossroads with 16 points.
Lucas Boze had three of the four Roadrunners 3-pointers, and he finished with 14 points.
The Spartans had a 9-4 advantage from beyond the 3-point line.
Damien has won seven consecutive games, and 13 of their last 14.
Up next: The Spartans will host St. Bernard on Tuesday in the quarterfinal round.
The Vikings (15-11) edged La Mirada, 72-71, on Friday.
