Editor’s Note: I did a pair of video interviews with Bonita Coach Rob Froh and four of his athletes, but for some reason both files were corrupted approximately 30 seconds in. I wanted to apologize to Rob and those wrestlers for wasting their time. I made many efforts to remedy the situation, but I didn’t have any luck.

Bonita finished the 2023-24 regular season at 9-1.

The Bearcats closed out Palomares League team duals with a 42-33 victory at Glendora.

BHS and GHS had their fair share of injuries heading into Tuesday’s showdown, and neither program had their full starting lineup.

Glendora had leads of 12-0 and 15-3, but the Bearcats would overtake the Tartans late to claim victory.

The Tartans got pins from Jesse Jimenez (106) and Jason Mora (113) to take a 12-0 lead.

Nico Vasquez (120) pulled Bonita to within 12-3 with his decision victory over Dominic Pedroza.

Anthony Reyes extended the Tartans advantage to 15-3 after a decision victory at 126 pounds.

Dylan Garcia and Aidan Chaires got back-to-back pins for Bonita at 132 and 138, respectively, and the dual was tied at 15-15.

Glendora would answer back thanks to a pin at 144 pounds by Nico Frias.

BHS would take its first lead of the night after pins from Xander Rivas (150) and 157-pound Nathan Ebel.

Cole Shaffer got GHS even again with a pin of Thomas Jiminez in the 160-pound bout.

Bonita, though, would win three of the final four matches to pull away.

Two-sport star (football & wrestling) Cole Parra pinned Jonathan Meyer early in the first period.

The most competitive match of the night had to be Michael Martinez versus Glendora’s Jackson Evans at 190 pounds.

There were a couple of stoppages in the bout when Evans was bleeding, and Martinez eventually persevered in a 6-5 victory.

Matt Mijares followed with a pin for BHS at 215 pounds.

And Glendora heavyweight Isaac Gomez was awarded a forfeit win after Bonita’s Vincent Lucero injured his leg in the first period.

Up next: The Bearcats will find out in the next day whether they’ll get an at-large bid for this weekend’s CIF-SS team duals.

Next weekend, both GHS and BHS will compete in the Palomares League (individual) finals at Ayala High School.
