College Football:
By Brian Reed-Baiotto, Sports Editor
Citrus College closed out the 2023 season by living out a Van Halen song.
After 34-28 and 42-13 victories over Canyons in the season opener and finale, respectively, Brandon Hayashi’s program ‘finish what ya started,’ in style, as Sammy Hagar famously sung.
Unlike week one, the Owls never let Canyons back in the game.
Citrus scored the game’s first 21 points and took a 35-6 lead into the fourth quarter.
The two-headed monster known as Tayvonne Miller and Kannon Katzer had another dominant tag-team effort.
Miller (14 carries for 123 yards & two TD’s) and Katzer (20-109 & two scores) combined for 232 yards and four TD’s.
Katzer had TD runs of 2 and 3 yards, and Miller scored on runs of 64 and 18 yards.
Koy Riggin completed 15-of-23 for 103 yards.
Riggin and Julian Walker hooked up on a 3-yard TD to give Citrus a 7-0 lead.
Leonard Adams closed out the win with his 29-yard pick-six in the fourth quarter.
Jesse Carmona had three catches for 35 yards in his final game for the Owls.
Walker caught two passes for 27 yards.
Chandler Carthan finished a brilliant career at Citrus with 12 more tackles, and he led the Owls defense with more than twice the tackles as any of his teammates.
He also served as the team’s punter.
Cody Stordahl, Xaviar Black and Drew Merrill had five tackles apiece in the season finale.
I’ve said it before, but the Citrus sophomores deserve an obnoxiously loud shoutout.
The athletes on both the 2022 and 2023 teams won at a record-setting pace, and they set the bar so high for this proud and well-coached program.
They finished their JC careers with a record of 19-3, including the first undefeated (11-0) run in program history (2022), and a 2-0 mark in bowl games (wins over Mt. San Jacinto & Canyons).
A big thanks to David Guerrero for these highlights:
Good luck to all of you.
It was a privilege to document your success.
