For all intents and purposes, in week eight, the Chino High School football program secured the 2023 Sierra League championship.
The Cowboys held the now career TD pass leader at Covina, Jake Duronslet, out of the end zone, and defeated the Colts, 38-25.
The Kevin Glaspy-led Covina program went to work three days later, and they put the setback at the hands of the Cowboys (9-0, 2-0) behind them.
Fast forward to Friday, October 20th, and CHS traveled to Pomona in game two of their three-game Sierra League schedule.
Duronslet and the running game got back on track and cruised to a 70-34 victory.
The Colts scored 42 first-half points, and they had a 28-7 advantage over the Red Devils in the second half.
Covina’s ground game doubled their output from a week ago, and they gained 302 yards on 29 carries.
That included four rushing TD’s.
Joaquin Barragan totaled 150 rushing yards on 15 carries.
Barragan had TD runs of 6, 18 and 8 yards.
Jacob Perez carried the ball six times for 93 yards, and that included a 58-yard TD run.
Duronslet completed 12-of-18 for 171 yards.
The Colts junior tossed four TD passes and two picks.
Duronslet is now the Covina career leader in TD passes with 69.
In two years and nine games, Duronslet has thrown for 5,416 yards.
Abraham Perez had five receptions for 102 yards, and Perez had TD catches of 26 and 30 yards.
Adrian Rachal caught seven passes for 69 yards.
Rachal reeled in TD receptions of 11 and 30 yards from Duronslet.
Rey Marquez had three tackles, two of which were for-loss.
And Marquez intercepted two passes and brought both of them back for scores.
Up next: Covina travels to Rowland this Thursday to close out the regular season.
The Colts intend to enter the playoffs with a record of 8-2 overall and 2-1 in Sierra League games.
