Football:
It seemed like everything was stacked up against the Glendora football program.
After starting 4-0, the Tartans lost their next three games, and had last week off to contemplate the rest of the 2023 season.
And Friday’s Citrus 4 League opener didn’t look promising either.
Los Osos took an 18-0 lead into the break over their visitors from GHS.
Glendora entered the locker room having totaled just 67 yards of total offense.
But the Tartans outscored the Grizzlies, 32-7, in the second half, and claimed a 32-25 victory.
Believe it or not, GHS’ first lead of the night didn’t come until there was just 42 seconds remaining.
Tied at 25-25, Matthew Jordan rumbled in from five yards out for what turned out to be the difference.
Jordan also got Glendora on the board with a 2-yard TD run just 89 seconds into the second half.
Simon Zwick helped set up that score and gain some momentum when he took the first play from scrimmage for a 56-yard run.
Decker DeGraaf caught a 44-yard strike from quarterback Eric Najarro, they converted the 2-point conversion and Hunter Lemos’ 37-yard field goal late in the third quarter allowed GHS to catch Los Osos at 18-18.
LOHS quarterback Mason Overacker scored on a 30-yard run midway through the fourth quarter to give the Grizzlies a 25-18 lead.
But Simon Zwick had a 22-yard TD run, and Jordan’s 5-yard TD allowed the Tartans to head west on the 210 as winners, and in the process, they snapped the three-game slide.
Nicolas Martinez had 5-and-2-yard TD runs in the first half for LOHS.
Overacker tossed an 11-yard TD to Dylan Reiner to give the Grizzlies a 12-0 lead.
A relentless GHS rushing attack, however, was too much for Los Osos.
Zwick (20 carries for 159 yards & one score) and Jordan (23-for-127 & two TD’s) combined for 286 yards rushing on 43 carries.
Najarro finished 9-of-24 for 82 yards, including one TD and one interception.
Najarro gained 19 yards on four carries.
DeGraaf caught two passes for 44 yards and a score, and Tim Johnson had four receptions for 18 yards.
