Softball:
Covina edged Garey 7-6 on Monday in a game that featured a combined 28 hits.
Oddly enough, the slugfest ended on a double-steal.
Natalie Contreras got the loss for Garey after 6 2/3 innings of work.
She surrendered seven runs (five earned) on 13 hits.
Contreras didn’t walk anyone and struck out five.
Maya Venegas’ one hit of the game was crucial in the win.
Venegas made her way to third base in the bottom of the seventh inning.
And when Danielle Singley broke from first base to steal second with two outs, the Garey catcher attempted to throw her out, and Venegas came home with the game winner.
Samantha Centeno doubled twice, scored a pair of runs and had an RBI.
Ebony Ruiz singled, doubled, scored and had an RBI.
Kennedy Griego went 3-for-3, including a double, run scored and RBI.
Jolee Rodriguez singled twice and scored, and Arianna Barrera singled, scored and had an RBI in the win.
Jordan Cervantes was credited with the win.
She went 2 2/3 scoreless innings and scattered four hits.
Natalie Contreras went 4-for-5, with a double, run scored and three RBIs.
Alyssa Avila singled twice and scored and both Nikki Avelar and Zoie Diaz had two hits and one RBI apiece.
Up next: Covina will travel to Charter Oak on Wednesday for a 3:30 showdown with the Chargers.
