Football:
Upland had one final tune-up before opening Baseline League play next Friday at undefeated Damien.
The Highlanders took charge early and secured a 31-10 victory at Charter Oak.
UHS scored the game’s first 28 points, but they struggled with turnovers and penalties the rest of the way.
Trent Dailey had 1-and-10-yard TD runs in the first quarter.
Justin Benson reeled in a 10-yard TD pass from Noah Sandoval.
And Donovan Brown picked off a COHS pass and returned it 63 yards for a pick-six and a 28-0 lead.
Mitchell Gibbens booted a 40-yard field goal to get the Chargers on the board.
Bryan Egland’s 27-yard field goal in the fourth quarter would cap the scoring for the Highlanders.
Charter Oak pulled to within 31-10 when Legend Lyons caught a 14-yard TD pass from Joel Sanchez in the fourth quarter.
Although Charter Oak didn’t have the offensive fire power to pull itself out of a 28-point deficit, Dominic Farrar’s boys battled their asses off from the first to final whistle.
They played like the game was still on the line and that’s a credit to the athletes and their coaches.
