Football:
How would Covina respond to its week-three, two-point loss to Northview?
Quite well.
The Colts improved to 4-1 after a 37-21 victory at La Salle.
Matthew Gutierrez booted a 25-yard field goal to give CHS a 3-0, first-quarter lead.
The Lancers would take their first (and only as it turned out) lead of the game when Zachary Lifton found Mauricio Pavon on a 10-yard TD pass.
Joseph Rangel had TD runs of 6-and-22-yards, as Covina regained the lead at 17-7.
And Joaquin Barragan’s 3-yard TD run gave the Colts a 23-7 advantage at the break.
To their credit, Ben Buys’ boys responded with a pair of TD’s to pull to within 23-21.
First, Drew Ward caught a 30-yard TD pass from Lifton.
David Vanden Bosch rumbled in from five yards out for the Lancers.
The two-point conversion attempt, however, was not successful.
Following the Vanden Bosch score, Covina’s Kevin Perez took the kickoff back 70 yards for a TD to take a 29-21 lead.
And Rangel’s third TD of the game, a 20 yarder, put the game out of reach for the Colts.
Up next: Covina travels to Sierra Vista on Friday, and the Lancers head to Pasadena Poly on Saturday for a rare 11 am kickoff.
