College Football:
Chaffey College secured a convincing 34-9 victory at LA Valley College in Saturday’s season opener.
The Panthers scored the game’s first 21 points and finished off the win on a 13-0 run.
Chaffey had a 425-190 advantage in total offense, including a 242-95 edge in the ground game.
Dereun Dortch had a solid opener for the Panthers.
He completed 10-of-12 for 140 yards and two TD’s.
Dortch connected with Demajea Mitchell on a 25-yard TD, and he found Jayson Cortes on a 9-yard scoring strike.
Dortch led the rushing attack with a game-high 115 yards on 10 carries.
His 14-yard TD run in the third quarter extended Chaffey’s lead to 28-9.
Ian Eveleth also threw a TD pass.
Eveleth connected with Corey Cabriales on a 10-yard score.
Jayson Cortes gained 66 yards on 13 carries, and his 14-yard TD run in the fourth capped the Panthers scoring.
Cortes also had four receptions for 83 yards and the one TD.
Syrano Ware and Corey David led the Chaffey defense with six tackles apiece.
Andy Chavez had a rough night at quarterback for LA Valley.
He completed 14-of-31 for 79 yards and was picked once (Ayer Davis).
Up next: The Panthers host LA Pierce this coming Saturday at 6.
