Football:
In a game that will serve St. Francis well as they prepare for Angelus League play and the CIF-SS playoffs, the Golden Knights dropped their first game of the 2023 season on Friday.
Long Beach Millikan visited Jim Bonds Stadium, and edged SFHS, 17-10, thanks to a 14-3 Rams advantage in the second half.
It was a battle between the 48th (LBM) and 49th (SFHS) ranked programs in the state by MaxPreps.
A 22-yard TD pass from JP Mialovski to Loyall Mouzon with 6:35 to play turned out to be the game winner.
John Calmette’s 10-yard TD run with just over a minute to play in the first half gave the Golden Knights its first lead of the game at 7-3.
The Rams drove the ball to the SFHS 9-yard line with three seconds to play in the first half, but the Golden Knights’ Jamie Lawyer blocked a 26-yard Millikan field goal attempt.
Shawn Sanders booted a 37-yard field goal with 2:53 remaining in the third quarter to extend the St. Francis lead to 10-3.
But to their credit, Millikan finished the game on a 14-0 run.
An aggressive LBM defense held John Sanders to 6-of-18 passing for just 60 yards and two interceptions.
Calmette finished with 90 yards on 18 carries.
Up next: The Golden Knights travel to Downey on Friday to battle St. Pius at 7.
The Warriors (0-3) fell, 27-7, at Etiwanda, on Thursday evening.
