Boys Basketball:
You can’t make this up.
The only Palomares League program still standing is fourth-place Bonita.
And to add icing to the Bearcats’ cake, they knocked off the top seed in the CIF-SS Division 3A playoffs on Saturday afternoon.
With the game tied at the break, Bonita outscored visiting Paraclete by nine in the second half, and claimed a 61-52 victory to advance to Tuesday’s quarterfinal round.
And to add a little drama, 14 of the Bearcats’ 17 fourth-quarter points came from the free-throw line.
Josh Kim had a game-high 17 points, and he made six of his eight free-throw attempts.
Colton Perez finished with 16 points, and went 8-for-8 from the charity stripe in the final period.
Hunter Smith scored 12 points, all of which came from beyond the 3-point arc.
Smith’s fourth-quarter 3 was the only basket Bonita made in the final eight minutes.
Mister Burnside (no, I am not making that up) led Paraclete with 16 points, including three 3-pointers.
Devon Marshall chipped in with 16 points, and Donovan Ware had 12.
Up next: The Bearcats and Saints meet up at San Dimas on Tuesday for a spot in the D-3A semifinals at stake.
SDHS and BHS met up on December 5th, and San Dimas claimed a 73-69 victory.
On Friday, the Saints picked up a 62-55 victory at Woodbridge.
