Girls Basketball:

Hailey Schaffer gives so much of herself to make Glendora and her teammates as versatile as they’ve become.

But on Tuesday night, whether she wants it or not, the light shines brightest on the GHS senior.

Schaffer became the sixth player in program history to reach the 1,000-point plateau by scoring 21 points in the Tartans’ 59-58 victory at Ayala.

Schaffer scored six of her 21 points in the fourth quarter to help fight off a valiant effort by the Bulldogs.

GHS is now 5-0 in Palomares League play.

Brianna Gomez had three enormous 3-pointers in the fourth period, and finished with 11 points.

Ayala outscored GHS, 34-29, in the second half.

Addison Gonzalez had a big night with 21 points.

In fact, the Bulldogs freshman made four of Ayala’s six 3-pointers.

Emily Cruz chipped in with 16 points in the loss.

The Bulldogs got eight points apiece from Malia Ishibashi and Aaliyah Gregory.

Reagan Herrmann and Rylie Anderson contributed eight points apiece for GHS.

Up next: GHS and AHS will both be in action on Friday.

The Tartans will host Claremont and the Bulldogs host Colony.

Quotable:

GHS coach, Adam Nunemaker: “Three years ago after a league win when Hailey was a freshman and she had a big fourth quarter for us, I said “there’s something special about that freshman.” That was the understatement of my coaching career. She has been nothing but special both on and off the court the past four years. As for tonight’s win, it is always tough to win league games, and especially on the road. And I’m proud of our team for figuring a way out to win and get out of there with a victory.”
