Approximately five minutes into Thursday’s Palomares League showdown at Bonita, Ayala had already jumped out to an early 12-0 lead.
The Bulldogs got a second-period pin from Jayron Chan at 106 pounds, and BK Martinez (113) stuck her BHS opponent, Xavier Perez, in just 33 seconds.
Bonita got even at 12-12, after pins from Owen Callaway (120) and Dylan Garcia (126)
The Bulldogs, however, followed with a pair of pins from Dean Collins (132) and John Gonzalez to regain the lead (24-12).
The Bearcats would claim six of the final eight matches to defeat Ayala, 47-34, including five pins and a tech fall.
In all, BHS won eight of the 14 matches.
Tristan Fernandez picked up a 16-1 tech fall at 145 pounds to spark the Bearcats run.
Xander Rivas (152) got BHS close with a second-period stick, and Nathaniel Gonzalez (160) gave Bonita its first lead of the match thanks to a last-second pin.
Nathan Ebel (170) was called up from JV, and despite dropping an 11-3 major decision to Tommy Tucay, Ebel made his program proud by not getting picked or losing by a tech fall.
Michael Martinez (182), CT Clancey (195) and 220-pound Micah Tofilau picked up consecutive sticks.
It was Clancey’s pin at 5:37 that officially clinched the victory for Bonita.
Ayala heavyweight Nicholas Partida would close out the night with a pin just three seconds into the second period for the Bulldogs.
