Boys Basketball:
If you asked Bishop Amat’s Brandon Ertle or GHS’ Gordon Hamlow, both coaches would say Friday’s night’s showdown at the Glendora Tournament was anything but a thing of beauty.
Both programs struggled offensively and there were more turnovers than either side would have wanted.
But without question, Amat’s 44-39 victory over GHS will serve both teams well as they enter league play and beyond.
It had the intensity and physical play that resembled something greater than a pool play contest in mid-December.
Amat led almost all of the way.
In fact, the Tartans didn’t get their first lead of the game until there were just over three minutes remaining in the third period.
And that advantage didn’t last long.
GHS tried to erase a 32-24 fourth-quarter deficit, but Amat did just enough to seal the victory.
Manuel Chavez scored a game-high 12 points for the Lancers.
Matt Rodriguez chipped in with nine points, and Eli Chavez contributed seven in the win.
Glendora freshman Max Hilgenfeldt finished with a team-high eight points.
Elijah Regan and Landon Barragan provided seven points apiece for the Tartans.
Perhaps the biggest factor in Friday’s late game was a Lancers’ defense that held Colton Gray and Chris Lee to just six points each.
Benji Holt scored four points for GHS.
Up next: GHS will battle Don Lugo tonight (Saturday) at 5:30 for third place.
And Amat faces Diamond Bar at 7, and it’s for the Glendora Tournament championship.
