Boys Athlete of the Week:
It was both a trying and successful week for Bonita High School wide receiver-defensive back, Kevork Markossian, or Georgie, as most people call him.
According to CalPreps, Bonita was projected to fall to the reigning CIF-SS D-10 champions from Northview by their score of 40-19.
It was the third week in a row that particular site miscalculated the Bearcats fortunes.
Shortly before BHS was to take on a talented and well-coached NHS program, Markossian got a call that his mother, Annette Markossian, was being rushed into emergency surgery.
No one has a real manual for how to handle these real-life scenarios, but instead of dwelling in the unknown, Markossian told himself that he needed to do something special for his mom.
Markossian did just that, scoring four TD’s and totaling 140 receiving yards in a crucial 42-35 victory over the Vikings at Covina District Field.
With the game tied at 35-35, and just over a minute to play, Bonita was facing a 3rd-and-2 scenario at the Northview 45-yard line.
BHS quarterback Daniel Andrade found Markossian for a 45-yard TD, and the Bearcats’ Joe Parra would pick off a pass to seal a solid victory.
Bonita enters its bye week on a four-game win streak, which includes victories over San Dimas, Los Osos, Claremont and Northview.
Up next: BHS will open Mountain West League play on Friday, October 14th, as they travel to Alta Loma.
It should be noted that Northview handled the Markossian drama with class and love.
In fact, the father of Northview quarterback James Arellanes, shared the game story on Twitter, praising Markossian’s play and wishing Mrs. Markossian nothing less than a full and speedy recovery.
He wasn’t the only Northview player, coach or adult to do the same.
