Football:
Rio Hondo Prep’s current senior class just wrapped up a four-game career sweep of their rivals from Pasadena Poly.
On Friday, the Kares cruised by the Panthers, 35-6, at South Pasadena High School.
And from multiple sources, RHP coach Mark Carson took his foot off the gas pedal early because of his character and class, or the Kares point total would have likely doubled
Rio Hondo Prep had a 423-111 advantage in total offense (yards), and that included a 289-to-minus-28 surge in the Kares ground game.
The University of Cal commit, Ryan McCulloch, rushed for 105 yards on eight carries.
McCulloch had TD runs of 25 and 19 yards.
He also caught four passes for 82 yards, and that included a 31-yard TD pass from Armando Carbajal to give RHP a 28-0 lead with 9:17 to play in the third quarter.
Noah Penumuri carried the ball six times for 72 yards, and Anthony Hernandez had a 4-yard TD run in the second quarter.
Carbajal completed 5-of-17 passes for 76 yards, had the one score and was picked twice.
Alex Mustain tossed a 28-yard TD pass to Nate Curtis and the Kares extended their lead to 35-0.
Curtis had two receptions for 40 yards and the TD.
Poly’s Henry McDonald was 14-of-33 for 139 yards, with a TD and interception.
Nicolas Cardenas led the Panthers with 62 yards on five catches.
McCulloch capped off his final head-to-head showdown with three sacks of McDonald.
Rainn Pollock had a team-high five tackles and the RHP defense sacked McDonald six times.
Cody Nelson had the one pick for the Kares.
RHP’s offense picked up 22 first downs, while Poly had seven.
In their four wins versus the Panthers, RHP’s margin of victory is a combined 120-34.
Up next: The Kares travel to Anaheim on Thursday to battle Savanna.
The Rebels (0-4) are coming off a 42-0 beatdown at the hands of Westminster.
Quotable:
RHP coach Mark Carson: “It was a good night for us. A lot of our young guys got playing time and did well.”
RHP senior, Ryan McCulloch: “It was a great win. We didn’t come out great, but we persevered and fought throughout the game. Competing against Poly is always a great time. As a senior, the win meant more. Throughout the week, we were prepping for this game, necause playing poly is always different.”
