Boys Athlete of the Week:
There wasn’t a program in the 210 Prep Sports coverage zone that had a more definitive victory over a solid opponent like Ayala.
The Bulldogs welcomed Monrovia to their field in a battle of 3-and-0 programs, and the Wildcats offense entered Friday’s contest with a scoring average of 48 points per game.
Ayala wasn’t fazed in the slightest by a heavy storm or the gaudy offensive numbers that MHS had put up through the first three weeks.
AHS excelled in all three phases of the game, and crushed the Wildcats, 41-0, to improve to 4-0.
The second half was played with a running clock, and Monrovia lost its quarterback, Brian Salazar Jr, in the first half.
While the AHS defense deserves massive praise, as does Bulldogs quarterback Bryan Wilson, the boys from Chino Hills were happy to see a sophomore running back step up.
Anthony ‘Jedi’ Hernandez carried the ball 14 times for 131 yards.
And that included TD runs of 11, 1 and 4 yards.
Hernandez nearly doubled his rushing yards (71 yards) for the prior three weeks combined.
Perhaps most important was the fact that Hernandez allowed Ayala coach AJ Gracia to sit Marquis Monroe.
The Bulldogs workhorse was a little banged up, but Gracia said Marquis could have played if AHS really needed him.
Up next: Ayala travels to Chino Hills on Friday night at 7.
