Don’t look now, but the South Hills football program is making a dramatic 180-degree turn for the better.

Heading into its season opener in week zero, the Huskies hadn’t won a football game for 1,034 days.

SHHS would end that streak with a 21-7 victory last Friday at Diamond Ranch.

Fast forward seven days, and South Hills got a 13-yard scoring strike from Noah Gonzales to Messiah Luter with three minutes to play to edge Covina, 16-14, at Covina District Field.

To make it more satisfying for the Huskies, the Gonzales to Luter hookup came on a 4th-and-4 scenario.

The last time South Hills had won consecutive football games dates back to October 10th and 18th of 2019, in wins over Walnut (40-0) and West Covina (42-13).

The Huskies had 194 yards of total offense on Friday, including 160 rushing and 34 through the air.

Tyler Casal gained 80 yards on 15 carries, and Gary San Angelo carried the ball 10 times for 62 yards and a TD.

Danny Astorga rushed for 39 yards on eight carries.

Noah Gonzales completed 2-of-4 passes for 34 yards, but one of the two turned about to be the game winner.

Astorga led the way defensively with 10 tackles.

Nate Fogg-Martinez totaled five tackles, including two-for-loss and a sack.

Landon Hansen chipped in with seven tackles and forced a fumble.

Jadakiss Vaokakala had three tackles, including a sack.

Up next: Covina and South Hills will both be in action this Friday.

The Colts travel to Diamond Bar, and the Huskies will face off with Northview at Covina District Field.
