In America, we get caught up placing too much importance on an athletic event.
And then there are stories like that of Ayala senior Dominic Alloway that puts sports in its proper perspective.
On Tuesday, Alloway called his cousin, Adrian Alloway, to wish him a happy 18th birthday, and finished the call by saying, “I love you.”
Adrian might be his cousin, but Dominic considered him a brother and a best friend.
Adrian went back to sleep, but tragically never woke up, which left his family and friends devastated.
Three days later, Dominic Alloway took the field in Ayala’s home opener and scored two long TD’s in the Bulldogs 28-7 victory over their visitors from Etiwanda.
Alloway turned short passes into 53-and-76-yard TD’s, and Dominic could be seen pointing to Heaven and dedicating both scores to his beloved cousin.
In all, Alloway caught three passes for 133 yards.
Bryan Wilson completed 9-of-14 pass attempts for 314 yards.
The Bulldogs junior threw four TD’s and was picked once.
Lytallion Payne would take a Wilson pass 90 yards into the south end zone in the third quarter to cap the AHS scoring.
Anthony Hernandez caught an 18-yard TD pass from Wilson, and Drew Amico had two receptions for 51 yards.
Thanks to Mark Sanchez for this clip of the Hernandez TD.
Three Ayala running backs combined for 128 yards on 32 carries.
Both Marquis Monroe and Eddie Huerta rushed for 49 yards apiece, and they each had 11 carries.
Hernandez gained 30 yards for the Bulldogs on 10 carries.
The Ayala defense swarmed Etiwanda quarterback Demaricus Davis throughout, and they plugged holes up front to hold the Eagles to just seven points.
AHS is 2-0 and they’ve scored 28 points apiece in wins over Torrey Pines and Etiwanda.
At the bottom, there are video interviews with Coach Gracia, Wilson and Alloway, as well as a couple of game highlights.
Dominic thanked his coaches and teammates for the unconditional love they’ve given him since Tuesday’s tragedy, and said it’s meant the world to him.
It goes without saying that we all send our love to the Alloway family.
Up next: Etiwanda and Ayala will both be in action next Thursday.
The Eagles travel to Rancho Verde, and the Bulldogs host Leuzinger.
