Welcome to Charter Oak High School, Richie.
In his first start since transferring from La Salle, Richie Munoz threw for 370 yards and five scores.
The Chargers’ senior would have had six TDs, but in the third quarter, there was a dropped pass in the east end zone on a fourth-down play.
But all that mattered to Munoz was that Charter Oak earned a 38-24 victory at Covina District Field over the defending CIF-SS Division 10 champions from Northview.
COHS ended the first half on a high note.
Munoz hit Jayden Alexander on a seven-yard TD with two second remaining to give the Chargers a 21-10 lead.
Alexander did a terrific job getting one foot down before going out of bounds.
Munoz would extend the lead to 28-10, hitting Nathan Alvarado on a 20-yard score.
Northview got to within 28-17, when Keanu Tauvao scored on an 8-yard run in the third quarter.
But Charter Oak would eventually pull away.
The Vikings rushed for 321 yards, but only attempted six passes on Thursday night.
Tauvao gained 134 yards and scored three times for NHS.
Angel Barraza carried the ball 20 times for 147 yards to pace the Northview ground game.
Solomon Davis caught six passes for 77 yards, which included a 14-yard TD to tie the game at 7-7.
Zakkari Black took a screen pass 85 yards for a score, and had four receptions for 103 yards.
Isaiah Johnson caught a 54-yard TD pass from Munoz, and Johnson ended any Northview chances of a late comeback when he picked a pass and ran it back deep in Northview territory.
Joseph Gutierrez had a 23-yard field goal for NHS, and Luis Marin converted on a 28-yarder for COHS.
Munoz finished with 437 total yards of offense, gaining 67 yards on the ground.
Up next: Charter Oak and Northview will be back in action next Friday.
The Chargers will host Glendora (0-1) and Northview will battle South Hills (1-0) at Covina District Field.
