After all the buildup and excitement of having a 2021 spring football season at the last minute, La Salle came out week one and dropped a 41-19 decision to St. Genevieve at home.

It’s been said that true character, though, is accurately measured by the way in which one deals with their failures, not so much their success.

And if you know anything about La Salle coach Ben Buys, you know this young man is principled and defined by his character and work ethic, which made it almost a certainty that his Lancers would bounce back.

Buys, his staff and players did just that.

La Salle got 282 total yards from sophomore quarterback Richie Munoz and earned a 33-27 victory at Mary Star of the Sea on Friday night.

Munoz completed 9-of-17 pass attempts for 200 yards and three TDs.

The Lancers’ sophomore also led the ground game with 82 yards rushing.

Angelo Godoy rushed for 37 yards and a TD.

Rashaad Austin gained 67 yards on 11 carries.

Marcus Powe caught five passes for 77 yards, including two for touchdowns.

Gio Butteri had three receptions for 75 yards.

Isaac Mora’s lone catch of the night was a 44-yard touchdown.

Powe was a menace to the Mary Star offense, tallying an insane 18 tackles.

Up next: La Salle will travel to Salesian next Saturday.

Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.

Quotable:

La Salle coach, Ben Buys: “We saw some growth in preparation and precision between week one and week two. There are a lot of areas we still need to grow in, but we are going in the right direction. It was good to see our guys make the plays when they needed to close out the game.”

Records: La Salle (1-1); Mary Star (0-2)
