Baseball:
It doesn’t get much more even than Friday’s D-1 showdown between San Dimas and Arcadia.
The Saints entered the first-round playoff game 19-6, while their host was 20-6.
And it was a head-to-head match-up of two of the SGV’s best pitchers, in starters Matt Romero (SDHS) and his AHS counterpart, Ian Hoffstetter.
Arcadia got single runs in the first and second innings, and San Dimas caught the Apaches with a run in both the fourth and fifth.
The game would remain tied until the top of the 11th inning, when Kasen Khansarinia’s RBI single turned out to be the difference.
San Dimas will move on to the second round after a 3-2 victory.
The Apaches out-hit the Saints, 11-7, but AHS committed five errors, as compared to one for SDHS.
Hoffstetter, who entered the game with the second most wins in the SGV (11), went six innings and allowed two runs (one) earned on three hits.
Hoffstetter issued two walks and fanned 10 SDHS batters.
Daniel Chavez allowed just one run on four hits over his five innings of work.
Chavez walked three and struck out one.
Along with his RBI single in the 11th, Khansarinia also walked twice, and hit a solo HR in the fifth to get San Dimas even at 2-2.
Vaughn Coleman singled, doubled and scored.
Ryder Young walked twice, singled and scored for SDHS.
Matt Romero went the first nine innings and surrendered just a pair of runs on nine hits.
Romero walked two and fanned nine Arcadia batters.
San Dimas’ Kody King earned the win after two scoreless innings of relief.
King allowed two hits, didn’t walk anyone and struck out one.
King faced a two-on and two-out scenario in the bottom of the 11th inning, but the Saints sophomore coaxed a ground out to close out the win.
Alex Dolan singled twice, doubled and scored for the Apaches.
Lance Wong went 2-for-5, with two RBIs.
Evan Huang singled and scored, and Zach Huerta singled twice in Friday’s loss.
Up next: San Dimas will host Villa Park on Tuesday.
The Spartans (25-4) edged Ayala, 3-2, in the first-round game.
