The Glendora and Rancho Cucamonga pitching staffs both worked their way in and out of a number of jams on Monday afternoon.

In the end, though, the Tartans were able to hold off the Cougars, 4-1, to claim their first victory of 2021.

Dylan Escobar went the first four innings for RCHS, and allowed just an unearned run on one hit.

He walked two and fanned four GHS batters.

Brensen Hyde got the loss after surrendering three fifth-inning runs.

Hyde went 2/3 of an inning, allowed three hits, walked one and struck out one Tartan.

Glendora catcher Carson Collett singled and his fifth-inning double drove in the eventual game winning runs for Glendora.

Braydon Wooldridge walked, singled and scored twice in the win.

Michael Moses walked with the bases loaded to collect an RBI.

Donovann Jackson got out of a first-inning, bases-loaded jam with just one run’s worth of damage.

Jackson went the first five innings to earn the win.

He allowed one run on five hits, walking two and striking out seven Cougars’ batters.

Michael Moses also got into a little mess late, but he worked his way through it to earn the save.

Moses went the sixth and seventh innings without surrendering a run.

He allowed one hit, walked two and fanned a pair.

Jake Brown walked, doubled twice and scored.

Jayden Lopez, Braydn France, Jacob Billings and Wilson Dunn collected one hit apiece in the loss.

Up next: RCHS and GHS will both be in action today (Tuesday).

The Cougars host La Quinta and the Tartans travel to Sunny Hills.

Glendora coach, Dan Henley: “Donovann Jackson really showed grit today getting out of that first-inning jam against a quality opponent. He gave us a strong five inning effort today, which was backed up by a solid two inning save by sophomore Michael Moses. Carson Collett was a huge factor today, both defensively guiding a strong pitching performance and keying a big three-run fifth- inning with a huge two RBI hit.”

Rancho Cucamonga coach, Tony Garcia-Bautista: “It was a see-saw battle… both teams working themselves out of jams in key situations from the first inning. In the end, they got the job done and we did not. That is a good team. It was a pitcher’s duel of left handers, which was exciting to see as a fan of the game. We limited our lefty (Escobar) to 70 pitches or less (68). Their lefty starter showed a lot of character battling through five tough innings and he did a great job. We had our opportunities, but did not capitalize.”

Glendora catcher, Carson Collett: “Donovann dealt with a rough first inning, but built up his confidence playing with a chip on his shoulder and knew the game was in his hands. As we know, he was very successful throughout the rest of his innings pitched. Michael Moses came in and did exactly what the team needed him to do. He throws strikes with confidence, get outs for our ball club, and it caused us to receive the outcome we all wanted. Our team has a lot of talent this year and we were stoked to receive our first win of the season. Many more to come.”
