After the sudden passing of their beloved coach, Scott Penner, mid-season, less than two years ago, the girls tennis program at Whittier Christian was in recovery mode last season, without a permanent coach, and with a lot of volunteerism from team parents keeping things afloat.

Things are turning around for the Heralds, with a new coach, and with a tight team culture.

With last year’s senior team captain returning as an assistant coach, and with continued solid parental support, this year’s squad has a revived feel and is heading in a positive direction.

Though the final score was lopsided, many of today’s matches were hard-fought, especially in singles, as evidenced by the final singles set’s late sunset finish.

As has been the case all season, the Lady Minutemen were paced once again by their singles corps of senior, Grace Yang, and sophomores, Sarah Fong and Hannah Su.

All three were able to keep winning the key big points en route to a 9-0 sweep.

The Heralds top doubles team swept Maranatha’s doubles lineup fairly handily, but the Lady Minutemen won 5 of the other 6 doubles sets, to prevail, 5-4, overall. The young Lady Minutemen (7-3 overall, 1-2 in league) continue to improve each week, but time will tell whether they have improved enough to earn themselves a CIF-SS playoff berth.

That question will be partially answered next Tuesday, when they travel to league rival, Valley Christian (9-3), who they edged out for the Olympic League’s second playoff spot last season.

With incumbent league champion, Village Christian, looking like they will earn the league’s top spot, it’s most likely that the league’s second and final spot will be battled out between the Defenders and the Lady Minutemen.

Next Tuesday’s match will be the first of two encounters. They split their two matches last season.
