Football:

For the first time in eight years, the South Hills football program finished the first half of the season at 4-1.

However, Santa Fe made the Huskies work overtime on Friday.

Literally.

SHHS persevered in a 29-22 victory in OT.

South Hills held a 22-14 lead with 25 seconds to play.

Giovanni Garcia pulled the Sentinels to within 22-20 with his 1-yard TD run.

Aiden Garate tied the game with a successful 2-point run.

The Huskies actually had a chance to secure a win in regulation, but a 40-plus yard field goal attempt came up short.

But not to worry.

On the first play of overtime, South Hills quarterback Fabian Marez and Isaiah Castellano hooked up on a 25-yard TD pass.

The Huskies defense finished off the Sentinels, as a fourth-down pass attempt fell to the ground and it set off a celebration for the boys in green and yellow.

Dryshaun Smock got South Hills on the board with a 74-yard pick-six.

Maxal Rodriguez caught a 14-yard TD pass just before the break to give SHHS a 14-7 lead.

Marez completed 10-of-17 for 191 yards and the two scores.

The Huskies defense picked three Santa Fe passes in the win.

Jaylen Lang scored on a 4-yard TD run for SHHS.

Castellano had five catches for 138 yards.

Up next: The Huskies have a week-five bye, and then they’ll open Hacienda League play on October 2nd at Covina District Field, as they battle Covina.
