Tennis:

Thanks to Maranatha for this report:

Severe weather conditions the last few weeks forced the rescheduling and canceling of many matches in the CIF-Southern Section.

For Maranatha, that means playing three matches in three days this week.

In last year’s match, the Lady Minutemen used a well-balanced attack to dominate the Moors, 16-2.

With last year’s five seniors doubles players now departed, the singles lineup knew they had to carry the load, especially this early in the season.

Hannah Su (6-1, 6-0, 6-0), Sarah Fong (6-0, 6-1, 6-2), and Grace Yang (6-2, 6-1, 6-2) each played with fortitude in sweeping their opponents, 9-0, while the entire brand-new doubles lineup gained valuable competitive playing experience.

A large part of how the Lady Minutemen ultimately fare this season will depend on how determined this year’s underclassmen newcomers will be in learning the game and developing the skills and fortitude necessary to be competitive.

Jennifer Chu/Peony Liu won their final two sets, 6-1, 6-1, after a see-saw 7-6(3) loss in their opening set.

Natalia Kalajian/Franziska Ries won their second set, 7-5, registering the second victories of their high school careers.

With their first win of the season, the Lady Minutemen are now 1-1 overall.

Though tomorrow’s match is officially an away match versus Pasadena High School, the PHS courts are quite familiar to Maranatha, as they have been the site of MHS’s practices and home matches for the past several years.
