Football:
Things looked good for Claremont on Thursday night at Citrus College.
The Wolfpack held a 13-0 lead over their hosts from Glendora with 4:40 to play in the first half.
Unfortunately for CHS, the Tartans scored 22 points before the half, and before it was over, Glendora had accumulated 43 unanswered points.
Claremont got on the board with four minutes and some change left in the first quarter when former Tartan Brandon Coronado hit Adan Zacarias on a 4-yard TD pass, but the extra-point failed.
Midway through the second quarter, Coronado hooked up with Jordan Trice on a 32-yard TD and a 13-0 lead.
Tyson Rush made a couple of huge plays to turn the game in Glendora’s favor.
Rush caught a 78-yard pass from Lawrence to get GHS on the board.
After a Quinn Thompson 6-yard TD run and a Thompson 2-point reception gave the Tartans its first lead at 14-13.
With 30 seconds remaining in the first half, Claremont decided to put the ball in the air and Rush intercepted a Coronado pass and returned it for a 30-yard pick-six.
GHS took a 22-13 lead into the break.
In the third quarter, Cole Ellis’ 50-yard TD run and Carson Kassotis’ 15-yard TD catch (from Lawrence) allowed the Tartans to pull away.
Unfortunately, Coronado was injured in the third quarter and never returned.
Thompson’s 21-yard TD run with 7:14 to play capped the GHS scoring.
Ellis carried the ball nine times for 87 yards and the TD.
Thompson had the two carries (both touchdowns) for 27 yards, and a pair of receptions for 20 yards.
Lawrence completed 9-of-13 for 191 yards and two TDs.
Lawrence actually had a TD run that was called back for a holding penalty.
Rush had three catches for 125 yards and two picks on defense.
Johnny Jabbour also picked a Claremont pass on Thursday.
Kassotis had two receptions for 28 yards, and the TD catch in the third quarter.
Up next: CHS and GHS will both be back in action on Friday.
Glendora hopes to get Nazir McGlothen back next week when the Tartans host Alta Loma (2-0) at Citrus College, and the Wolfpack travel to Pacifica.
