Football:
After three consecutive CIF-SS championships and a massive graduating class, Rio Hondo Prep had a lot of new faces and names in key positions.
The one thing that didn’t change, however, was the outcome.
In Friday’s season opener, the Kares cruised to a 35-0 victory at Schurr.
Dating back to 2024, RHP has won 13 consecutive regular season games and 18 of their last 19.
Matthew Montez was the breakout star of the game.
Montez took the opening kickoff 80 yards for a TD and a 7-0 lead.
He also rushed for TDs of 11 and 55 yards.
Montez was able to gain a game-high 79 yards on five carries.
Rio Hondo Prep enjoyed a 151-61 advantage in rushing yards, and the Kares had 204 yards of total offense as compared to 111 for the Spartans.
Christian Lee had eight carries for 31 yards, including a 2-yard TD run in the third quarter.
Elias Har gained 20 yards on three carries.
Donald Scheffler completed 4-of-9 for 53 yards.
With 3:31 remaining in the first half, Scheffler connected with Joshua Fairley on a 19-yard TD connection.
Nicolas Harrington had one reception for 16 yards.
Aiden Delgadillo had a dominating game for the RHP defense.
Delgadillo tallied game highs in tackles (9) and sacks (2).
Harrington finished with six tackles and a sack.
Nathaniel Riley (7) and Christian Lee (6) combined for 13 tackles.
Nathan Flores led the Schurr ground game with 50 yards on 10 carries.
Aaron Rodriguez and Jacob Torres combined to go 10-of-15 for 50 yards.
The RHP defense forced seven punts.
Schurr was flagged eight times for 70 yards, while the boys from Arcadia were penalized just three times for 35 yards.
Up next: The Kares host Troy next Friday at 7.
The Warriors had a week-zero bye.
Quotable:
RHP coach, Mark Carson: “It was a solid performance for week zero. Our defense was feisty, and our offense did some nice things. As you’d expect, we still have a lot to work on. All in all, the guys played hard and played together- that’s what we like to see.”
