Football:
The youngest head football coach in the San Gabriel Valley got his first career win on Thursday.
And he did so for his alma mater.
But it was far from easy for 25-year-old San Dimas coach Dylan O’Leary.
The Saints had a pair of seven-point deficits in the first half before securing a 24-21 victory over their visitors from Glendora.
SDHS didn’t take their first lead until midway through the third quarter.
After a scoreless first quarter, GHS quarterback Sebastian Lawrence found Miguel Garrard on a 76-yard TD pass.
Just over three minutes later, Vincent Scates changed the momentum of the game with his 33-yard pick-six, and the game was tied at 7-7.
On the ensuing kickoff, the Saints elected to attempt an onside kick, and it didn’t pay off.

Glendora would take advantage of the field position, as Nazir McGlothen’s 50-yard TD run gave the Tartans a 14-7 advantage just 14 seconds after SDHS had tied the game at 7-7.
The Saints and Tartans went into the break in a 14-14 tie after Liam Loyola found his way into the end zone on a 51-yard scoring run with 2:51 to play in the first half.
San Dimas secured its first lead of the game with 5:06 to play in the third quarter.
Matthew Witherby, who went 3-for-3 on extra-point attempts, booted a 38-yard field goal, and SDHS would not trail again.
Scates gave the Saints a little breathing room with his 19-yard TD run with 4:12 to play.
Glendora didn’t give up.
In fact, with 1:50 remaining in the game, Lawrence scrambled and eventually found Carson Kassotis on a 6-yard TD connection.
The Tartans got the ball back one more time, but they were unable to cross over into the San Dimas side of the 50-yard line.
Up next: GHS and SDHS will both be in action next Thursday.
The Tartans travel to Walnut and the Saints visit Chaffey.
Box Score:
GHS: 0-14-0-7-(21)
SD: 0-14-3-7-(24)
Quotable:
SDHS coach, Dylan O’Leary: “I wasn’t that nervous for my first game because I felt at home. I looked up and saw the 57 freeway and it was sort of a weird feeling. The support of my staff gave me a lot of comfort. Vincent Scates’ pick-six changed the game. We had just gone on a drive and stalled, so his play gave us momentum and confidence. It changed the energy on the sideline. I felt like Mikey Baeza and the entire offensive line played a huge part in this win. This feels good, but I’ll be back at school early on Friday to start getting prepares for Chaffey.”
