Baseball:
No one on the Covina roster was alive the last time the Colts had won a playoff baseball game.
And it was almost over before it began.
CHS had to score three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to claim a 4-3 walk-off victory over their visitors from Tustin in the first round of the CIF-SS Division 6 playoffs.
It was the program’s first postseason win since 2006.
After consecutive wins over Alhambra (15-5) and Western Christian (11-6), the Colts now find themselves in Tuesday’s D-6 semifinal at Lakewood.
CHS has gotten contributions throughout its lineup.
However, no two players have done more than Donovan Johnson and Lucas Thorpe.
Johnson has pitched in all three games, and he’s 2-0 with 16 strikeouts in 12 1/3 innings.
At the plate, Johnson is 7-for-12 in the playoff with a pair of doubles, six runs & six RBIs from the leadoff spot.
Thorpe had been a game changer.
He’s 8-for-13 with two doubles, a triple and three HRs.
Thorpe has scored four runs & totaled nine RBIs.
Up next: CHS travels to Lakewood to battle Spud O’Neil’s Lancers.
O’Neil is in the final season of his Hall of Fame career, which includes nearly 1,000 wins.
