Mia Diaz Hits Grand Slam in Etiwanda’s 11-9 Victory at Westlake in Second Round of CIF-SS Division 1 Playoffs

Softball:

After trailing from the top of the first in Saturday’s D-1 showdown against visiting Etiwanda, the Westlake softball program scored three times in the bottom of the sixth to catch the Eagles at 9-9.

Fortunately, EHS scored twice in the top of the seventh to secure an 11-9 victory and a spot in Wednesday’s quarterfinal round.

Etiwanda out-hit Westlake, 16-10, including a 3-1 advantage in extra-base hits.

Presley Watters went the distance for the Athletics, and she was charged with 11 runs on 16 hits and six walks.

Watters registered three strikeouts.

The Eagles scored four runs in the top of the first, and, as mentioned, they never trailed.

After opening the game with a pair of singles and a walk, Mia Diaz hit a grand slam to give EHS a 4-0 lead.

Dailynn Battee went 2-for-4 with a walk, two runs, a two-run HR and an RBI ground out.

Karrington Bennett drew a pair of walks, scored three runs, singled, and her RBI triple in the top of the seventh drove in what turned out to be the game-winning run.

Amani McField walked, singled in an insurance run in the seventh and scored.

Frankie Nevarez singled four times in as many at-bats.

Alysse Mendoza and Aliana Rodriguez walked, singled and scored one run apiece.

Justyne Zabala went 2-for-4 with an RBI.

Ava Reyes singled and Elise Pina and Gisselle Peraza scored one run apiece.

Ella Florence went 1 2/3 innings and she was charged with one run on two hits.

Florence walked one and fanned one WHS batter.

Westlake got to Mya Coleman for five runs (three earned) on five hits, five walks and a pair of hit batters over three innings.

Coleman registered a pair of strikeouts.

Jenna Wallace surrendered a pair of runs on one hit and four walks over two innings.

Wallace struck out one.

Kayleen Aleman allowed an unearned run on two hits and a pair of walks before inducing a pop out to close out the victory.

The Eagles committed three errors that cost them three runs, and four EHS pitchers combined to issue 12 walks to secure a D-1 second-round road win.

Lily Barrett walked, doubled, scored twice and had an RBI ground out.

Leah Kitzman went 2-for-2 with a run and one RBI.

Brooke Bird-Cespedes drew a pair of walks, singled twice and scored a pair of runs.

Sydney Katz went 2-for-3 with a pair of walks, including one with the bases loaded and scored one time.

Isla Ange drew three walks, was hit by pitch with the bases loaded and scored a pair of runs.

Teagan Zoog singled in a run and scored.

Up next: The Eagles battle La Mirada on Wednesday.

The Matadores (24-4) shut out Palos Verdes, 3-0, on Saturday.
