Covina Secured an Eight-Inning, 5-4 Walk-Off Victory Over South El Monte in Second Round of CIF-SS Division 5 Playoffs

Softball:

For the second time in 48 hours a Covina High School program secured a walk-off playoff victory.

On Thursday, the Colts baseball program scored three times in the bottom of the seventh to claim a 4-3 win over their visitors from Tustin.

Two days later, and with the game tied at 4-4, Covina scored once in the bottom of the eighth inning to edge visiting South El Monte, 5-4.

The game featured seven combined errors that cost the Colts and Lions four unearned runs apiece.

Covina’s only lead of the game came in the decisive eighth inning.

Loreli Castrejon got the loss after surrendering five runs (one earned) on five hits, six walks and two hit batters over 7 1/3 innings.

Castrejon struck out three CHS batters.

Kaila Dominguez walked, and her ground ball to short scored the game-winning run.

Kailey Dominguez walked and singled from the leadoff spot.

Kaitlyn Dominguez scored once in Saturday’s win.

Aubrey Sandoval walked and singled.

Sandoval also got the win by going all eight innings and not allowing an earned run.

She issued five walks and registered five strikeouts.

Katelyn Berumen drew a pair of walks and doubled in a pair of runs in the top of the fifth inning.

Loreli Castrejon doubled and scored.

Zoe Medina walked and scored.

Gia Castruita went 2-for-4.

Sofia Medina reached base on a fielder’s choice in the top of the first and scored.

Camila Rivas doubled and scored.

Savannah Pacheco singled and scored two runs.

Isabell Ramirez was hit by pitch, and she had an RBI single in the bottom of the second to get Covina on the board.

Lambertz Summer walked, was hit by pitch and scored.

Up next: The Colts will battle University (Irvine) on Wednesday at 3:15.

The Trojans (15-9) edged their visitors from San Marcos, 2-1, on Saturday.
