Baseball:
What a heartbreaking way to end a successful 2026 season.
In Tuesday’s D-1 opener against top-seeded Norco, Maranatha led 7-3 in the bottom of the sixth inning only to fall, 8-7.
On Friday, visiting Ayala led 6-0 before the Minutemen scored two runs apiece in the bottom of the fourth, fifth and sixth innings to tie the game at 6-6.
The Bulldogs scored once in the top of the seventh and avoided a seventh-inning jam to hang on for a 7-6 victory.
Easton Sarmiento went four innings for AHS, and he was charged with four runs on seven hits and two hit batters.
Sarmiento didn’t issue a walk and registered six strikeouts.
Nolan Chuang was charged with a pair of unearned runs on three hits over 1 1/3 innings.
Caleb Trugman walked one and hit three MHS batters in 2/3 of an inning.
Jake Zandbergen got Ayala out of a two-on and no-out situation in the seventh inning.
Kaleb Derosier was hit by pitch, hit a solo home run and tied the game at 6-6 on a sixth-inning sac fly
Trevor Rivas walked, tripled in a run and scored.
Yahir Treto singled three times and scored.
Will Suslow went 2-for-4 with a walk, run and an RBI double.
Mikey Herman was hit by pitch and doubled in a run.
Lukus Perez went 1-for-3, was hit by pitch, doubled, scored and drove in one.
Gabe Barragan singled and Noe Zavala scored.
Kaden Lai got the start for MHS and he was charged with six runs (five earned) on eight hits over three innings.
Lai walked one and fanned three AHS batters.
Kaleb Derosier provided 3 2/3 innings of relief, and he surrendered one run on two hits and a hit batter.
Derosier issued two walks and registered four strikeouts.
Dre Murakami got the final out in the top of the seventh.
Jonah Boyd went 3-for-4 with two RBIs, including what turned out to be the game-winning RBI single in the top of the seventh.
Elijah Duarte had an RBI single, an RBI double and scored a pair of runs.
Jaden Valenzuela walked and scored.
Easton Sarmiento walked, singled and scored.
Ivan Ruddell walked, doubled in a run and scored.
Dylan Wood was hit by pitch, singled twice and scored two runs.
Caleb Truman went 2-for-3, including an RBI single.
Up next: The Bulldogs will host Norco on Tuesday, and the winner will face Notre Dame in Friday’s quarterfinal round.
The Cougars (25-4) entered the playoffs as the No. 1 seed, and they rallied to defeat Maranatha, 8-7, on Tuesday.
On Friday, Notre Dame of Sherman Oaks shut Norco out, 4-0.
