Covina Earns First Playoff Win in 20 Years; Colts Score Three Runs in Bottom of Seventh to Secure 4-3 Victory Over Tustin

Covina didn’t just earn its first CIF-SS playoff win in 20 years, the Colts did so in dramatic fashion.

Trailing 3-1, CHS scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh to secure a 4-3 victory over visiting Tustin in the first round of the CIF-SS Division 6 playoffs.

Donovan Johnson went five innings, and he allowed one run on five hits and one hit batter, but he wasn’t in on the decision.

Johnson issued a pair of walks and registered seven strikeouts.

Isaac Flores got the win, and he surrendered two runs on three hits over the final two innings.

Flores walked one and fanned one THS batter.

Angel Rodriguez went 2-for-4 with two RBIs.

Dylan Benally walked, singled and scored.

Jacob Policare singled twice and scored a pair of runs.

Adam Whyte walked and had an RBI ground out.

Garrett Menges doubled, while Kobe Ardelean and Elijah Robinson had one single apiece.

Whyte went six innings and he was charged with two runs on five hits.

Whyte issued one walk and registered 10 strikeouts.

Nathan Saltzer got the loss after allowing two runs (one earned) one two hits over 2/3 of an inning.

Lucas Thorpe tied up the game in the third and seventh innings with an RBI single and an RBI triple, respectively.

Donovan Johnson singled and had an RBI ground out in the seventh.

Aaron Magdaleno’s ground ball to short was misplayed and allowed Thorpe to score the game winning run.

Aiden Ayala singled, doubled and scored a pair of runs.

Aaron Cordova walked and singled.

Isaac Flores singled and Ethan Echeverria scored.

Up next: The Colts travel to Alhambra on Tuesday at 3:15.

The Moors (18-11) outlasted their hosts from Mary Star, 17-14, in a first-round slugfest.
