Baseball:
Claremont entered the CIF-SS postseason having lost five of their final six Palomares League games.
The Wolfpack took one of two with Bonita, and then got swept by Glendora and Ayala, respectively.
CHS went from second to fourth place in three weeks.
And they headed to Arcadia County Park on Thursday to open the Division 4 playoffs against a La Salle program that was ranked 79 spots higher than Claremont in the MaxPreps state rankings.
With all that said, it was a sophomore that put the Wolfpack on his back in a 1-0 victory in eight innings.
Brady Houlton tossed a one-hit eight-inning shutout.
Houlton allowed a one-out seventh-inning single to Andrew Klein, and faced one over the minimum (25 batter).
He didn’t issue a walk and registered eight strikeouts.
Sixty-two of his 91 pitches were strikes.
Nico Armendariz got the loss after surrendering just one run on five hits over 7 1/3 innings.
Armendariz walked three and struck out nine Claremont batters.
David Eriksson got the final two outs in the top of the eighth inning for La Salle without any damage.
Nico Vasquez led off the top of the eighth with a single.
After a strikeout and a wild pitch that allowed Vasquez to go to second, the Lancers elected to intentionally walk Reed Miller.

That brought Houlton to the plate.
Houlton doubled to left to score Vasquez with the game’s lone run.
Miller was walked twice and singled.
Evan Blacksher and Jacob Lucas had one single apiece for CHS.
Up next: The Wolfpack host Rio Mesa on Tuesday at 3:15.
The Spartans (18-10) shut out their visitors from Hesperia, 6-0, in Tuesday’s first-round contest.
