Baseball:
The CIF-SS playoff pairings were released one day earlier than they had scheduled.
Three programs within our coverage zone earned Division 1 status.
This postseason, there are 16 D-1 teams, and there are four pools made up of four teams.
Each program is guaranteed two games, and they’ll need to win two of their first three games to earn a spot in the D-1 quarterfinal round.
No one got a tougher first-round opponents than Maranatha.
The Minutemen (23-5) travel to top-rankled Norco (24-3) on Tuesday in a ‘Pool A’ contest.
The Cougars are ranked fourth in the state by MaxPreps and 14th nationally.
The MHS-NHS winner will face off with the Ayala (23-3)-Notre Dame (24-3) winner, and the loser of both games will battle for survival on Friday.
The Baseline League champs from Etiwanda (20-7) travel to No. 5 Corona (21-6) in Pool D.
The EHS-CHS winner will battle the victor of the Corona Santiago (18-10)-Orange Lutheran (23-5) game on Friday.
And the loser of both games will attempt to avoid elimination on Friday as well.
In Division 2, South Hills (22-6) will host San Clemente (18-10) on Thursday.
The Huskies, ranked 46th in the state, shared the Hacienda League crown with Alta Loma, but the Lions took two of three with SHHS.
It didn’t seem to do ALHS (18-6-1) any favors, though, as they’ll travel to Westlake (18-8) in a D-2 showdown.
In Division 3, Damien (13-13-1), who went 5-6 over their final 11 Baseline League games gets to host Edison (12-16) on Friday.
San Dimas (13-13), the reigning D-3 runner-up, travels to Cajon (19-9).
Charter Oak (18-8-1), the Valle Vista League champions visit Beckman (17-10-1).
The Rio Hondo League champs from La Canada (19-9) host Summit (19-19).
Chino Hills (14-13-1), who lost eight of their final 10 games and finished tied for third in the Baseline League was awarded a home game against Pacifica of Garden Grove (15-12).
Arcadia (18-10), whose six-year reign atop the Pacific League came to an end (Burroughs) is the No. 2 seed in D-3, and the Apaches will host Simi Valley (16-10).
If LCHS and AHS were to win their first round games, they’d meet up next Tuesday.
San Marino (20-8) is the No. 1 seed in Division 4.
The D-4 bracket features eight programs within the 210 Prep Sports zone.
And it has the only head-to-head showdown.
Claremont (17-9), the Palomares League’s fourth-place team travels to Arcadia County Park on Thursday to battle La Salle (18-9).
Walnut (14-13), who finished third in the Palomares visits Saugus (14-14).
Northview (14-14), the VVL’s 2 seed, visits La Quinta (18-9-1).
Glendora (15-11), the reigning D-3 champs, and the Palomares League’s No. 2 seed, welcomes St. Anthony (20-7-1).
Upland (14-12) will host their first playoff game on campus against Riverside Poly (15-9).
For decades, the Highlanders played their home games at Memorial Park.
Monrovia (17-7-1) dropped their last two RHL games to La Canada, and that cost them a trip to Castaic (19-9).
In Division 6, the Valle Vista League’s No. 2 seed, Covina (11-13-1) welcomes Tustin (16-11) to their field on Thursday.
Muir (15-7), who enter the postseason having won 12 of their last 13 games, hosts Hillcrest (16-12).
In D-7, Marshall (9-15), who finished fourth in the Mission Valley League, will visit Santa Rosa Academy (17-4) on Thursday.
Rio Hondo Prep (9-9-1) welcomes a Beacon Hill (9-2) program that has played just 11 games all season.
Duarte (10-10) tied Nogales for second in the Montview League, and they were awarded a home game against Buckley (9-12)
