Carson Baker’s Two-Run Walk-Off Double Leads South Hills to a 3-2 Victory Over Ayala in Regular Season Finale

Baseball:

Way back on Saturday March the 10th, Ayala dropped a 15-4 ass kicking on their visitors from South Hills.

The Bulldogs out-hit the Huskies, 17-9, and hit three home runs.

Fast forward 57 days and AHS held a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the seventh at SHHS.

The Huskies had second and third with one out and they intentionally walked Gabriel Guerrero to load the bases.

That brought up Carson Baker against one of the area’s elite pitchers in UCSB commit and Ayala ace, Caleb Trugman.

On a 1-and-0 count, Baker hit a line drive to right-center that fell, and it allowed Paxton Czubek and Noah Sibrian to score the game-winning runs.

Trugman went 6 1/3 and allowed three runs (two earned) on six hits and a pair of hit batters.

Trugman issued three walks and registered 10 strikeouts.

Sixty-one of his 95 pitches were strikes.

Baker finished 2-for-3 with a run and the two RBIs.

Guerrero walked and singled.

Paxton Czubek walked, and he led off the bottom of the seventh with a double.

Victor Merlos and Diego Villarreal singled.

Sibrian pinch-ran for Merlos and scored.

Christian Santoyo went 4 1/3 innings, and he was charged with one run on three hits.

Santoyo walked four and fanned five AHS batters.

Nicholas Carrillo surrendered one run on four hits over 2 2/3 innings.

Carrillo issued one walk and struck out one.

Jonah Boys had a pair of doubles, including one in the top of the second that tied the game at 1-1.

Elijah Duarte walked, singled and scored a pair of runs.

Easton Sarmiento singled twice on Wednesday.

Caleb Trugman’s RBI single in the sixth gave Ayala a 2-1 lead.

Wyatt Dahl singled.

Quotable:

South Hills coach, Darren Murphy: “Ayala has been consistently the best team in the area all year and Brad has done a great job. He was a player for me at Northview, so I’m really proud of the job he’s done. As for us, this is a great team win against a very tough pitcher, and I’m just proud how greedy we were tonight. It was going to take everything we had and Carson got the big hit again like he has all year.’

Ayala pitcher, Caleb Trugman: “South Hills did a good job executing when they needed to, and they found ways to get baserunners late in the game and cash them in. They also got quality pitching and played solid defense.”

South Hills senior, Carson Baker: “When we lost at Ayala in March, we had a ‘let’s move on’ mindset. But they did get the best of us that day and they were smashing. We were very excited to get another chance at Ayala, and we know that they’re a very good baseball program. And what happened last time we met definitely made this moment even more special. I was looking for a fastball and trying to barrel something up. I knew when I hit it that the ball was going to drop and watching two of my teammates score was pretty surreal. It’s not only tonight, we head into the playoffs having won three consecutive walk-off victories.”
