Baseball:
Maranatha secured an eight consecutive Olympic League championship after Tuesday’s 19-6 mercy-rule victory over Valley Christian.
With two games to play, the Minutemen have a two-game lead over Heritage Christian, and MHS won two out of three in their head-to-head series with the Heralds.
Maranatha has won an Olympic League chance in every year since 2018 with the exception of 2020 when COVID-19 shut down their season after six games, including one Olympic League contest.
In 2026, the Minutemen have gone 9-1 in league games and they’ve done so by a combined margin of 129-25.
MHS out-hit VCHS 17-9, and they had a 5-3 advantage in extra-base hits.
John Cardenas got the loss after surrendering nine runs (two earned) on 10 hits over two innings.
Cardenas issued one walk and registered one strikeout.
Trevor Rivas went 3-for-3 with a walk, double, four runs and three RBIs.
Kaleb Derosier singled, had a pair of doubles, two runs and two RBIs.
Will Suslow went 2-for-4 with three runs and an RBI from the leadoff spot.
Jayden Morales walked, doubled and scored three runs.
Yahir Treto walked, singled, doubled, scored twice and drove in one.
Moses Alvarez went 2-for-3 with three RBIs, and he was hit by pitch.
Gabe Barragan singled twice, scored a pair of runs and drove in three.
Mikey Herman walked, singled in a run and scored.
Lukus Perez went 1-for-1 with a walk, two runs and four RBIs, including two via sac fly.
Kaleb Derosier went three innings and he was charged with three runs on five hits.
Derosier didn’t issue a walk and registered two strikeouts.
Kaden Lai surrendered three runs on four hits and a hit batter in two innings of work.
Lai didn’t walk a batter and got half of his six outs via strikeout.
Nico Villafana tripled in a run and scored.
Mack Lynott doubled in a run.
Lincoln Slater had a two-run double to get the Defenders on the board.
Max Douglas and Brody Beck singled and scored one run apiece.
Quintin Ekstrom went 2-for-3 with a run and one RBI.
Up next: The Minutemen travel to Valley Christian on Thursday at 4 in the second of a three-game series.
