Baseball:

Alta Loma surprised many area baseball fans by securing a Hacienda League series victory over South Hills, two games to one.

However, no one in the Lions dugout was surprised.

ALHS received a one-hit shutout by Logan Sein in Thursday’s 2-0 victory at SHHS.

After dropping game one of their three-game Hacienda League series, 4-3, the Lions claimed victories over 3-1 and 2-0 on Tuesday and Thursday, respectively.

South Hills finished the Hacienda League portion of their schedule 9-3.

Alta Loma has three league games next week against Los Altos.

The Lions would earn an outright league championship with a sweep of LAHS.

If they won two of three, ALHS would share the league crown with SHHS, however, since they won the head-to-head series, they’d be the No. 1 seed out of the Hacienda League.

But back to Thursday.

Sein had a no-hitter with one out in the bottom of the seventh until Victor Merlos singled.

Sein induced a fly out to center, and then with the tying run at the plate, Alta Loma catcher Silas Granados picked off the Huskies pinch runner at first base.

Sein issued a pair of walks, hit two batters and registered three strikeouts.

Fifty of his 74 pitches were strikes.

Nicholas Munoz got the loss after surrendering two runs (one earned) on two hits and a walk in one-plus inning.

Munoz struck out a pair of Lions.

Gabriel Guerrero provided six scoreless innings and allowed just one hit.

Guerrero walked three and struck out four.

Luke Proctor drew a leadoff walk to start the game and scored.

In the second inning, Logan Sein led off with a single and advanced to second on a wild pitch.

Lukas Spence singled Sein home and the Lions led 2-0.

Edward Garbo also singled for ALHS.

Up next: The Braves travel to Los Altos, and the Huskies host El Rancho.

Quotable:

Alta Loma coach, Dustin Frailey: “It’s been our MO the same all year. We treated the opponent the same, and the boys didn’t make the moment too big. We made it one game at a time. We wanted to pitch well and play solid defense. Logan had very good command of his secondary pitches and he was able to work backwards and get head with his slider. He didn’t let any of their hitters get into too many favorable counts. It gives us the opportunity to go out next week to win a league title and that’s special to the program.”

South Hills coach, Darren Murphy: “You have to give credit to Alta Loma. They won the series and played well.”
