College Baseball:
It’s no secret that Chaffey baseball is in a rebuilding mode.
The Panthers lost their coaching staff and many key players to Citrus College after a deep run in last season’s 3C2A playoffs.
On Friday, Chaffey won its eighth game of the season, and they avoided an embarrassment.
Victor Valley actually had a one-run lead as the game entered the bottom of the ninth inning.
However, the Panthers rallied for two runs to secure a 5-4 IEAC victory.
Victor Valley fell to 2-34 overall, and their current losing streak extended to 21 games.
In the two-run ninth inning, Robert Morales singled in a run to game at 4-4.
And sadly, how fitting for a program that hasn’t won since February than to hit Michael Saltzer with the bases loaded to force in the game winning run.
Hector Aquino went the first seven innings, and he was charged with three runs on six hits.
Aquino issued four walks and registered three strikeouts.
Ryan Silva Valadez fell to 0-3 after surrendering two runs on three hits, a walk and a hit batter in one-plus inning.
Mason Danison went 2-for-4 with a two-run single in the fourth to tie the game at 3-3.
And Danison scored the game winning run after trotting home on the bases loaded hit batter.
Along with being hit, Saltzer walked and doubled.
David Trujillo walked, tripled and scored a pair of runs.
Garrett Mori singled and Matthew Toscano and Evan Salcido scored once run apiece in Friday’s win.
Kristian Gonzalez walked and singled.
Up next: The Panthers travel to Cerro Coso on Tuesday at 2:30.
