Baseball:
Damien opened the Baseline League portion of their schedule with a 6-2 victory over visiting Rancho Cucamonga in the first of three games this week with the Cougars.
RCHS scored twice in the top of the first inning, and then the Spartans’ Ryan Wentworth, Ethan Chavez and Jacob Campos made that stand up.
Wentworth went five innings, and he was charged with two runs on six hits.
Wentworth issued one walk and registered five strikeouts.
He threw 49 strikes in his 76-pitch outing.
Chavez and Campos went one scoreless inning apiece.
They both allowed one hit, didn’t walk a batter and struck out one.
After a pop out and a ground out in the top of the first, Grant Thomas doubled, and Beau Briggs hit a two-run home run.
Chad Tanner singled and doubled.
Ethan Diaz walked and singled.
Trevor Newman and Richie Duran had one double apiece.
Joey Lopez got the loss after surrendering three runs (two earned) on five hits over three innings.
Lopez walked two and fanned a pair of Spartans.
Justin Stansbury was charged with three runs (one earned) on three hits and three walks over 2 2/3 innings of work.
Stansbury totaled two strikeouts.
Grant Corder went 3-for-3 with a walk, pair of doubles, two runs and three RBIs.
With a 4-2 lead in the bottom of the sixth, Corder’s two-run two-out double helped DHS pull away.
Elius Kelly singled and his solo home run in the fourth gave the Spartans their first lead of the game at 3-2.
Ryan Gonzalez had an RBI single in the fifth inning.
Oliver Hines walked, singled and scored.
Gino Tarzia singled and scored.
Michael Mansour scored in Monday’s win.
